At A to Z Tree Service we have expert arborists on staff who know the “dos” and “don’ts” of proper tree care.
However, even with a professional arborist at hand, you may want to know for yourself what to watch out for when giving your trees a haircut. It’s always good to be well informed, so the following is a list of “Don’ts” that many people make the mistake of doing with tree pruning:
Don’t top trees. Many people “top” trees and cut the main branches to stubs because they’re growing into utility wires, interfering with views or sunlight, or simply grow so large that they worry the landowner. This topping process is self-defeating because it causes ugly, bushy, weakly attached limbs to grow back even higher than the originals. Many arborists believe that in tree pruning, topping is the worst thing you can do for the health of a tree.
With tree pruning, never remove more than 1/4 of a tree’s crown in a single cutting. Try to encourage the side branches to form angles 1/3 off vertical (10:00 or 2:00 positions). The main side branches should be at least 1/3 smaller than the diameter of the trunk. If the removal of a main branch is necessary in tree pruning, be sure to cut it back all the way to where it is attached to the larger branch.
How to make a pruning cut. This is one of the biggest questions people have when pruning their trees. It’s important to be very specific about where and the angle the limbs are cut.
